Will Russell Wilson resurrect his career as a backup of Aaron Rodgers?
The NFL world is abuzz with speculation regarding Russell Wilson’s next move after the Broncos benched him. The signal-caller is also reportedly going to sell his mansion in Denver, setting the stage for his potential departure. With a hefty $37 million salary on the way, the question on everyone’s mind is whether the Denver Broncos quarterback will embrace a role as a backup, particularly to a legend like Aaron Rodgers. Could this unexpected twist be the key to resurrecting Wilson’s career?
Former NFL general manager Mike Tannenbaum made waves by proposing a daring plan for Wilson to sign with the Jets for a nominal $1 million, serving as A-Rod’s understudy. Mike thinks sitting behind one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, Wilson could learn, grow, and ultimately revive his career.
“If you’re Russell Wilson … where else is he gonna go?” Tannenbaum said during Monday’s Get Up!. “So, if you have to sit for a year, why not sit behind one of the greatest of all time and then be a free agent again? Pay him $1 million and let him resurrect his career”, he said.
First Things First host Nick Wright also proposed the Jets as a potential suitor for Wilson, given the condition that the team is managed by competent individuals.
The potential move of joining the Jets would reunite Wilson with Nathaniel Hackett, the Jets’ offensive coordinator and former head coach of the Broncos. However, the potential reunion comes with its fair share of challenges, as rumors swirl about a strained relationship between them during their tenure in Denver.
Meanwhile, doubts also linger about Wilson’s willingness to embrace a backup role of Rodgers. Mike Florio of Pro Football Network suggests that the Broncos QB is accustomed to the spotlight as a starter, and may not be content riding the bench. He contends that the signal-caller would demand assurances of a starting role in exchange for accepting such a minimal salary.
“Wilson won’t be doing that as a backup. He’ll want, in exchange for his willingness to take so little, a commitment that he’ll be the starter”, Florio wrote.
What is the potential next destination for Russell Wilson?
First up, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs find themselves at a crossroads regarding their quarterback situation. Baker Mayfield had a solid showing in 2023, but the team’s future at the position remains uncertain. Wilson presents an enticing option as a replacement for Mayfield as he can offer proven experience and a track record of success. With the financial flexibility due to extended cap hits, Tampa Bay could build a formidable roster around Wilson.
Another possibility for Wilson lies with the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers present an interesting scenario given their recent coaching and managerial changes. With a fresh start under new head coach Dave Canales, who has a history with Wilson, the team could provide a fertile ground for Wilson to thrive and rejuvenate his career.
Meanwhile, the Atlanta Falcons emerge as another destination for Wilson. With a promising roster and a new head coach in Raheem Morris, the Falcons offer an attractive environment for a quarterback of Wilson’s caliber. Additionally, the presence of GM Terry Fontenot, who boasts experience from his time with Sean Payton in New Orleans, could facilitate Wilson’s integration into the team seamlessly.
